So do I have to buy every pre WOD to get full access? Or can I just get WOD and start playing?

You have to buy regular wow + WoD if you want access to everything.
Every pre-wod expansion comes with the purchase of regular wow.

yeah, it's a bit of an initial investment, but not that bad. they bundle the earlier expansions into one bunch kinda like the old D2 battlechest + you get a free month when you first start a new account.
