Gold gets you nothing really unless you are bad at the game and feel the need to buy carries through comtent/pvp titles. Other than that it's just used on mounts/professions/xmog.

I buy stuff for friends all the time.
I donate my uneven gold to a friend everyday.
It's his lucky day if I die once and repair and do nothing else lol.
