I feel like 99% of you weren't actually around in vanilla. It wasn't all that hard, it was a lack of knowledge like other people have stated that made it hard. Once you figured out fights it was rather easy, plus once everyone was properly geared it was even easier.
being 'properly geared' meant something totally different back then though. Level 52-58 blues were 'endgame raid gear' in the beginning. Actually acquiring a single trinket with a beneficial effect was an accomplishment. Once you had gotten proper gear for your class, you had basically completed the challenge already, so of course things became easier.
Your statement "it wasn't all that hard' is too vague for me to agree with. The challenges were just different. Most of the players today would not able to handle the 3 hour 5-man instance runs where you actually had to CC every pull, wait for aggro and dps only the right target. Where accidentally aggroing an extra mob means a wipe that takes you 15 minutes to walk back from. Hell, some players today wouldn't even be able to walk their ass from Orgrimmar to Blackrock Mountain to enter the instance, nevermind actually complete it.
By today's standards, the actual class and boss mechanics are pitiful compared to what we've seen in later content. But that wasn't really the challenge back then. Successfully walking from Light's Hope to Stratholme without being indefinitely corpse camped was the challenge.
