Love these stories, wish people would share more. I did something similar(but nothing to do with anything duped)
Most gold i've ever personally owned, was almost realm gold cap. I had 10 characters on my realm(kel'thuzad) 1 was main with only 900k on it, the other 9 banker alts had guild banks with 999k in the bank, and another 900k+ in the bags.(+++all the gold worth i was holding) Most of this was extremely well timed professions when Isle of Thunder came out.
Isle of Thunder
You were able to get to the forge day one and get the item to let you craft (Lightning Steel Ingot) Some people were able to get 3 of these items before Blizzard hotfixed the area and wouldn't allow these items to be crafted until Forge was unlocked for your realm. So when Forge was unlocked, all my blacksmiths were 3 days ahead of everyone else on the realm. Who wouldn't pay a lot for a 502ilvl weapon when heroic end tier was only 509ilvl. So first day these weapons were possible, i unloaded all 10 of my Blacksmiths (Lightning Steel Ingots)x30 for over 250,000g EACH. By the time i was able to find buyers for the last couple of weapons, they dropped before 200,000g. By the end of the day, i had made over 2,000,000g(in just 1 day) ever since that day i have leveled up more and more professions on every alt i have. kept making more and more gold by barely doing anything(never bought stuff from ah to resell)
Sky Golems
When they brought the Sky Golem mount out, i had close to the same day. I had people reserve the mounts ahead of time for a 75% deposit fee(I was in the guilds top raiding guild, so we were trusted) I had sold 5 of these mounts for 400,000g each( with 300-350k deposit the week before) So for this day, i had made just over 1,650,000g. Again only from professions.
640 Crafted Gear
Then again when WoD hit, day one i leveled my main to 100 then started to level my alts to 91(unlocking level 2 garrison) and started doing the daily profession crafting. in the following week(once lag was getting better) i leveled them to 95 and unlocked level 2 profession buildings and got the follower to go into the buildings(for extra Work Order production) After i had done leveling my 2nd level 100, i unlocked level 3 barns and started trapping and stock piling the Savage Bloods(item needed to upgrade 640 gear to higher item level) So in the first weeks these were available, i had all 10 of my characters on Kel'Thuzad with hundreds of these daily crafted materials and lot of savage bloods to do upgrades. I think in the first day, i made just over 1,500,000g. First couple of upgrade items were selling upwards of 150,000g. I even bought more savage bloods because people were paying good money for the upgrade items. Any left over materials i crafted the 'reroll' items and sold em fast!
Yes this was a lot of profession stuff, but i never spent hours and hours buying/reselling stuff from the ah. in WoD, i spend 30-40 minutes TOPS doing all my garrison missions+Work Orders+Daily Crafts+Herb gardens on each of my characters. little bit of time here and there, you can make lots of gold easy.
I do buy and resell TCG mounts, but never from Chinese dupers(that i knew of)
I was going into WoD with over 9,000,000g. I had sold all but 1,000,000g to a close friend(bad idea for me, was to low on gold to buy BMAH items) To get ready for raiding, i had to gear my main and an Alt, so i dropped over 1,000,000g into 665BOE and crafted gear to get both my characters ready for first week of HM raiding and our split raids. Just before WoD hit i also found someone selling a bunch of TCG mounts at a reasonable price, so i bought them all(i own every TCG mount except Swift/Regular Spectral Tigers)(kid wanted 900k for both) wasn't worth it to me since i have WAY WAY cooler mounts to ride.
I pick my Amani War Bear, Invincible, Miniron's Head mount over that one any day.
The Sky Golem part sounds kind of bogus.
I mean yeah I guess if you wanted to make decent money by farming herbs or ore without dismounting it's okay but paying 400k gold (with 75% deposit) sounds awfully stupid.
The price of those dropped quickly because all it is is living steel and a cd that costs a little bit ore bars.
