I see two sides as well. That's why the first half of my post described the side that felt like lost characters were "wasted effort".
Point is, unofficial servers that will go down are no more guilty of producing this feeling of "wasted effort" than official servers that move to the next expansion and delete the game you love. The feeling of loss is the same in both places.
Yeah, I guess I just don't have the patience I once did for private servers. I used to play a lot of them, but usually just made my way back to retail. I guess more than fear of losing my characters, I would say the game wouldn't feel as fresh to me as it once did.. thus losing patience quicker. The only difference is that through all the expansions, I never once got that feeling you felt, because everything was still there, collectibles, achievements, gold, etc. So it wasn't a game breaker for me at least, I was able to adapt and still have fun. I felt this on RS because the changes were just plain bad and it actually took steps away from Runescape, and their numbers paid the price. As much as some people hate the WoW expansions, they never REALLY did anything to destroy their own game. Its numbers are still up there for MMOs if i recall. (Obviously over years the numbers dipped, but never really "sudden")
P.S I'm not putting anyone down for playing Elsyium/Nost, that's just my experience with it.
