Here's why I disagree:
A level 20 is sitting in town seeing all the level 60s with their epic mounts and gear gets pulled toward wanting that. Getting ganked in world pvp while leveling lights a fire under you, making you say "I don't want to do another corpse run, I really want to get good." Vanilla is set up to give you that push. I remember seeing one of my irl friends get his level 40 mount before me and I was like "hnnnngh must have my raptor now"
Whereas in WoD, players who completed heroic raids don't have the same push to go into mythic. Same armor models with different skins? Meh. You aren't socializing and making connections that make you feel the need to prove you are good by doing more. People have the ability to log in, do their daily garrison shit and then get the feeling they are "done". In Vanilla, you could never really feel that way except in the extreme case of a real hardcore player.
I see what you mean and I agree. The loot tables in the game back then really did make you want to progress. I remember when i finally got Wrath Shoulders and Helm on my Warrior from Onyxia runs. Couldn't even run through Org without getting 2-3 whispers of congrats or "where did you get thaaaaaat".
I have been on the same Vanilla priv server since right around Cata release and I've played it very casually, which has been a fun experience. I log on and do 1-2 quests and get 4-5 bars and that is enough for a day. But i average many many months for a 1-60 and rarely even poke out of rested exp on alts.
