I thought about it, but it's probably going to be a giant waste of time in the end of it. The server is going to just get shut down by Blizzard again, which is why i'm probably not going to spend hours grinding vanilla.
Besides, while the nostalgic part is cool about it, you can never 'really' re-live the moments of vanilla.

Jagex has proved you wrong.

07scape is more popular than RS3.

old expansions aren't perfect, but there is no perfect game out there. All depends what's most important to you.

Still, unless you haven't played through the best times of the game at the TIME, a remaster or whatever just wont do the same justice as the original (for me).
RS classic was one of the first PC games I played. Did RuneScape for many years through some of the best ones of the game, when Evolution of Combat launched I quit RS3. Along came 07scape, played for a while, got to like level 80 or something playing on and off, then bored and quit again. The content just wasn't as fresh as I originally played it, i had 10 times more fun in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 etc.
Same goes with WoW for me, I would love to see legacy servers so people have the option to do it officially and I would probably play those. However the transition between RS3 and EOC Runescape saw a MASS drop in subscribers, which FORCED them to create 07scape.
As much as people would like to think, Elysium (Nostalrius) hasn't done enough of a blow to WoW's current sub numbers, at least not enough to force Blizzards hand.
Though I have no desire to grind hundreds of hours into an unofficial server only to have it shut down. That was my whole point anyways, not saying that Vanilla wouldn't have great success for Blizzard.
I played Nostalrius for like a few hours then logged off because it just couldn't hold my attention like the game originally did when I first played it as a kid. Tried getting back into it twice, actually. Before it shut down.

Blizzard would somehow ruin a legacy server....

When retail went to TBC, I felt the same thing you are describing. All the work I had put into getting two level 60's with nice raid gear felt like it was going to go down the tubes when I vendored those epics in a month or so. All the effort I put into all 3 expansions I played is "gone" as Blizzard no longer offers me a way to play the classes I fell in love with.

But in the end, that logic doesn't really hold. If you enjoy the time you spent gaming, it is never wasted, even if the characters disappear.

That's true. No game offers the same experience as the original. But replaying vanilla is still closer to that experience than playing Legion for the first time.

That's true as well. Privates stealing population away from Legion isn't really much of a concern and never has been. The real concern, is Blizzard pushing players away from retail by doing more of the things that have been harmful in the past, such as a yearlong drought between the final tier of an expansion and the release of the next one.

Yeah I get that if you enjoy something it's not necessarily time wasted, but I see two sides to that, the fact that it's not on "official servers" would bother me and it would feel like time wasted for me personally, considering vanilla is a pretty decent grind.
I felt this the most on RS actually, when Evolution of Combat came out I felt like my account was ruined, then when they came out with 2007scape I tried to recreate that but just did not get the same feel as I once did.

I see two sides as well. That's why the first half of my post described the side that felt like lost characters were "wasted effort".

Point is, unofficial servers that will go down are no more guilty of producing this feeling of "wasted effort" than official servers that move to the next expansion and delete the game you love. The feeling of loss is the same in both places.
