The game still has 6 to 7m players and it will jump to about 10 to 11 in legion for awhile. The game isn't dead far from it and always fluctuates when content has been out for so long

Game is far from dead. Still the most active mmo out there. But the oldstyle community everyone once felt hasn't existed since cataclysm. If you haven't played for a while you'll definitely be entertained and an expansion is the perfect time to start back up with everyone getting a clean slate.

To answer OP's question: Far from dead - it is still the biggest Western MMO even now after a year-long content drought. With Legion the population will double as usual for most expansions.

I see that you haven't played in a while and I suggest that if you haven't experienced WoD, you should resub now because the leveling process 90-100 is the best thing in this expansion and is the main reason why it was so well-received at release. Just don't bother with garrisons because it's too late for that now and it will be pointless.
