If you didn't get enough time using the set for the entirerty of SOO then you probably didn't earn it.
I have it on 7 chars. I'll enjoy it on my alts. It was one of the things that made me not want to reroll horde with my friends.
I also lead a 5 of the clears, pugged all of them and didn't have a guild to leach off of, so yea I'd say it was "earned".
