Mobs/ interactive objects (chests, ect) are assigned an ID unique to whichever player got the killing blow/ interacted with the object. No trading between players. Shops are unique to players so sold items can't be purchased between players.
Basically solo play in a multiplayer environment, you get the gist.

I think it would be titts.

Most of the PvP players seem to not have switched from D2L to D2R because of mechanic changes. Which means that Blizzard kind of killed this interaction. If you shut down trading, there will also be no interaction anymore in PvM as well. People can't play together, but just parallel. Plus most of the drops will be pointless, since you play another class. Also there would be no way to support new players with some starter items. Furthermore, all the MFing that currently keeps D2R alive won't make any sense anymore without the ability to trade...
TLDR: OG players don't play D2R because of bad PvP. New players would abandon D2R as well if they are not able to trade. Then no players are left.

Well it would be a game mode you'd choose on creation, those who don't want to partake simply don't.
