Hey guys,

Enjoying replaying SP D2 Classic for about 8 months now.

I've been searching & reading now both here and online and I can't find an answer to a question about bringing forward items to other patches.
I know I've read it before somewhere...

Can someone give me guidance about bringing items forward from stock DII 1.03 to LOD 1.07 & 1.09(d)?
Brain coughs up vague and hazy memories about first going from 1.03 to 1.07 to "fix"/keep item properties? And then on to 1.09?

Any help would be appreciated. I quit DII after what, 1.10? when it screwed up some great characters and made the base game unplayable
without epic runewords. Also, I had nurtured an Act 1 Rogue to the 80-something level and she was a terror! Then they nerfed her *sniffle*

anyway, I'd like to bring forward some gobsmacking rares I've gotten that I'd take over many Uniques and maybe even some runewords.

Hmm, i don't remember about patching altering existing items.
If you're unsure, you can still backup the .d2s files somewhere before patching.

Yes, I'll do that. It's just niggling my brain that I thought there was something about it.

Thanks for the reply!

Some pre-patch mods were changed after 1.09. Some pre-1.09 item mods were removed or changed.

For example, you can’t have dual +skills anymore (i.e. +2 Barb & +2 Ama on an amulet). Unique items did not have level requirements prior to 1.09 (maybe 1.08?) Also, they refined certain modifiers to be more specific, though maybe this is just a UI change (I.e. ‘Increased Attack Speed’ in pre-1.09 has been changed to ‘Attack Speed Increased by (10-40%).

Not sure if this addresses your questions but it’s about the extent of my knowledge. I played offline prior to 1.10 but when we finally got good internet 1.10 had just come out.

I'm playing 1.03 (though might go to 1.06b) specifically for the rares (yellows)... I've found some amazing eyepopping ones.

Xhul, I rummaged around the internet amidst many bad links (I mean, 22 years...) and found what my soggy brain half-remembered:

You might be aware that items transferred directly from 1.06 to 1.12 will very often have their stats changed, but there's a very simple way to prevent this from happening.
All you need to do is get the item you wish to move forward in a character, and then open that character in 1.07 (and convert him to expansion if you wish).
After doing so you can bring the character forward to 1.12 (or any other version after 1.07) and your item's stats will be unchanged (the only thing that *might* change
will be the item name if it's a rare item, but there's nothing to do about it). When transferring unique items to later versions they'll get their corresponding level requirement
if they're converted to LoD, but won't if you keep them in Classic, so they'll be usable from level 1.

It's really enjoyable to find Uniques and mule them to starting characters! But I know I never saw rares like some of the ones I've collected playing 1.03. Many of them beat
Uniques hands-down, and I was interested in bringing these forward into other patches without messing up the stats. You can get up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes and
crazy +2 skills with prismatic resistances...

Okay, I'm off to gamble dual life & mana leech rings :D

Thanks for the hard digging, i bet you needed a time machine for that one.
I'm glad you now know what to expect before converting.
Cheers =]
