First 'diablo' experience was d1 on ps1 1998, it was—word for word—exactly the same as David Brevik described it in this talk he did. It was about the feeling he got when he made arpg history, after someone convinced him to change the game from turn based to live action and he walked into the catacombs and killed a zombie for the first time, watched him drop some loot and thought "This is awesome!!"
I got my first taste of the creepy atmosphere walking through town then talking to the dying guy outside the door to the catacombs warning about the butcher, then I walked into the catacombs and killed a zombie for the first time, watched him drop some loot and thought "This is awesome!!"
I got to the butcher. I've only ever gotten that same feeling from one other game, where they are able to properly convey that same feeling you get from, say a really creepy horror movie, using only very simple 90's graphics and sound, which I think was really cool. I saw all the bodies hung up, skewered and tortured, then tried to fight him, only to realize I had no chance, tried to flee before he killed me. As a young enough child, seeing all those bodies gave me that weird feeling that's hard to describe, like you find it creepy and dark but only kind of in a bad way, but also kind of in a good way, there was an intrigue to it. It would be like the kids version of what I imagine the same feeling is that draws some adults I know to look at gore websites, with execution/torture vids online.
I have no interest in the adult version, but the kids version is still cool.
btw the other game I mentioned. It was a scene from a jrpg called Suikoden II. The graphics are far simpler even than Diablo. Fairly early in the game there is a cutscene. The villain/warmonger Luca, had just burned and pillaged a town, and they've captured 2 survivors a man and woman. The man begs for his life as Luca cuts him down. The woman gets on her knees and begs, saying she'll do anything if he spares her life. "Is that right.... in that case, act like a pig." The woman, still in prayer position "Huh.....?" Luca "I said act like a pig!!!" So she gets down on all fours and starts crawling around, and you just see in the text box "Oink....oink.....oink....oink.....oink oink....oink" and he just goes "DIE PIG!!!" and butchers her on the spot. That scene always stuck with me, and I remember being blown away at how they were able to capture such a horrific scene with sprite animations, that had such a lasting effect. Actually I found a youtube vid of that scene -

Particularly because the awesome villain Luca would usually be the main big bad and most stories would end with their defeat. In Suikoden II, the villain Luca is just a catalyst for the real story, which is about the struggles of wartimes and how choices can lead people—who are best friends, both have good intentions and want to create a better future—down such different paths that they can end up becoming mortal enemies. Another cool thing about the game I liked is, it's one of those jrpgs where you can end up getting like 50 different characters to join you throughout the game, something I usually hate in jrpgs. But they did such a good job with it, because eventually every person you get to join you will end up playing a role later on in the game when you establish your own town throughout the war.
