Now this might just be my imagination gone wild but I seem to remember that back in the days when D2 was first released, before lod, duping and boting,
you had to have both mandal and nagel before it was even possible to drop a soj. And maybe something more i forgot..?
I remember it was crazy hard to find any unique ring, and as far as i remember I was gambling a lot of rings while haveing the other 2 rings in my inventory?

Is this a dream I had or? :D
Can't find anything on google

no

d2 does not check your client before a drop that you have items to find other items. it checks how much mf you have and adjusts the magic rare unique drop rates according to that but for example a zon does not find more zon items then another class drops are random. you still have to factor in how many are in game, treasure class of the area your on and the item level of what you want to find. some people who want to find sojs limit the monster level / tc level to the items ilevel to limit drop tables. it sounds good on paper but does not work in practice.

Soj could have dropped without manald and nagel but the odds for those are obviously way better.
And since there could only be one copy of unique from each type, keeping a manald and nagel in your inventory would have ensured that your next unique ring would be soj.

Incorrect. In the early days, uniques.txt had a check to prevent multiple uniques of the same type spawning. The check still exists now, it's just unused.

the double drop is true for pre expansion classic d2 but not for lod you can get double drops of the same item in the same game. what you are refering to was the 1.09 patch notes:
'Fixed a bug that allowed the same Unique to be spawned more than one once in a game"

there is an exception in that a unique item can double drop if the item is rolled twice on the same drop from a single monster. once that item is found for that game session it cant drop again until a new game is started.

test offline:
if you kill offline dclone it will drop an anni, in the same game respawn dclone it wont drop an anni.
