I haven't played D2 in almost a decade and decided to give it a go again for old times sake.

I've watched a few videos to get ladder runewords to work in single player and noticed those people have extended stashes. Is there a way to get it with editing some local files ie not installing mods? If only by installing mods, which one? Is it safe?

I think you could do it by editing local files, but not so easily, it's like creating your own mod. Maybe check for Plugy or Project Diablo2 mods, they add comfort and new features to the game while preserving the original feel.
