Crystal sword found in den of evil by minion of corpsefire, in nightmare. Arealevel is 36. Is the crystal sword level 36 and will get 4 sockets from larzuk?

corpsefire is mlvl39 while den of evil has arealvl36 (which is equal to mlvl36 for normal monsters). to get 4sox from larzuk, you need ilvl26-40.
so yes, your cs should get 4sox (i am not 100% sure though if there is some weird interaction with that minion status...)
i used a cs from NM trist lately, worked as intended

I thought it was area level that determined item level in nm and hell, but was a little uncertain.

item lvl is mostly determined by monster lvl of the monster which dropped it and the monster lvl is determined by the area lvl
bases for 4sox cs can be obtained in many (but not all!) areas of A5 norm amd A1 NM
