the perfect skull + SOJ reroll

use waypoint dupe for unlimited skulls + SOJS, then bots to roll all day

It was pretty clear that's the way he was doing it (for non-expansion Diablo 2 post 1.10), since he was buying bases sometimes

I actually did this too (on bnet) when the jerhyn/wp dupe got publicized
So i have a bit more technical knowledge but he was doing something more than just that.
Even spoke to him in game about exploits but he never gave me more than hints. I think it was a packet spoof at imbue with charsi. Like the imbue roll was handled client side instead of server and you could just block the regular c>s packet sent when you click imbue, send a custom crafted packet with the right mods attached, then the server creates the requested item with item id and the random ranges of the prefix/suffix/staffmod mods. As long as the item returns 'valid' the game doesnt drop and you can save/exit to perm the item. Repeat this process a few times (much much fewer than the millions or billions of random soj+skull rolls would take) to get a near perfect item, discard the rest. Or possibly block the c>s packet response where it returns the item so you can repeat it until you get one close enough to perfect, then save/exit

I never actually recreated it myself, and i suspect it was subsequently patched. He used to ask me about cLvl/iLvl requirements to spawn certain mod combinations, since i had a deep knowledge of classic item spawning. So all he needed was the right level character (to make the iLvl/aLvl reqs valid) a normal item of the desired type, and a malus to make an item that would take a hundred years of soj+skull rerolls to spawn

I very much doubt it, since imbue was investigated by lots of people.
And generally packet things were mostly patched. There was lots of investigation into the orfice thing - I think one of the dupes was to place items in the orifice (in act 2 staff) and then pull out the runes from them.

I doubt he was able to create items of thin air, because he simply had so few of them.
He seemed to be smart though, he never made perfect ones, only near perfect, so he could bleed the whales with like 1 or 2 dmg improvements.

But as far as I remember, usually he just had few amulets and weapons.
IM like 99% convinced he also had some perfect stuff for his own chars (that he never played / probably expired).

My theory is that he had some private dupe (maybe working version of waypoint one) to get the pskulls and SOJS.
This still meant that he needed tons and tons of time to roll the items.

I actually have two amulets from him, should probably check their item level, but I dont want to risk much (to lazy to research what is a safe way now).

Also have a pair of snatchiis on a mule, those were pretty funny, when u put them in trade window and they go out.

The most interesting thing was that he always said that this was very time consuming / unprofitable, what sounded very strange.

its hard to believe he made those insane items by duping skulls. he likely used the same method used to "craft" all the insane rares on LoD.

how does duping explain rares with the same stats / name / etc with different IDs? some even existed cross realm i believe.

over 10 years ago i saw sancorro's ladder sorc gear in game. he claimed he made his items about 4 days into the season. all his uniques had impossible ilvls. he had a perfect tyreals that was around ilvl93..

you could trade screen your amulets to someone able to see ilvls.

I know that it was related to imbue. What i dont know for sure is if it was some kind of 'import' to bring items crafted from single player or what i described before. But like i said. I did what you described, duping sojs and rerolling in cube. I didnt have mythical 'clientless' bots, but i was automating and using packet methods to move items for max efficiency. I was cranking out gg items at an alarming rate, but at around the same time he was absolutely dunking on me items-wise.

Theres another thing you can do with single player to create legit items if you then have some way to then import them. Set up a character with item in cube and full inv+stash of sojs+skulls. Make your char save file read-only. Then automate joining game, clicking stash, rolling item. You can copy and paste 100s or 1000s of the same bot profile, as many as your cpu can handle. When you 'find' a good enough item, have the bot go into an infinite delay. Then shut down all other bots using the same char file, unset read-only, and save/exit

I think the trick was to use imbue (again i dont know for sure how) to either import a single player crafted item with valid stats to gain a valid itemid or force the correct mods onto an item as it gets generated with a valid itemid. So you could for example, imbue a grim helm with 10fhr, 31-40life, 81-100ed, 21-30cr, 21-30lr but youd still have to try a bunch of times to get a high roll combination of those stats. But you go from billions of attempts down to maybe tens or hundreds of thousands. Still time consuming and barely profitable. But i never profited from anything in d2 either, i just had fun

/e as said before im almost 100% sure it was patched anyway around the same time or after they fixed catdupe. So everyone just assumed he was using the d00p

From memory he also used to be able to roll 100% perfect rune words guaranteed for a price. People would have to give him the base, the runes for the rune word and whatever amount he asked depending on the rune word they wanted.
