What is your favorite story character from D2? Besides Tyrael and Deckard Cain.
But to answer your question... and because I'm bored I'm probably just going to word vomit on the keyboard.
I really like Wirt. I remember I had been playing the game for a few days before I wandered across the bridge and found him. He is the only child (I think) in the whole story - and the only child NPC. I was probably around the same age as Wirt too, so I really related to him. Also, he was a BAMF because Fallen Ones chopped his leg off and he still got away. That dude was also a straight hustler - he would still hobble his way into the dungeon to get gear to try and sell you, which he also charged you just to look at it.
Then to top it all off he makes in appearance in D2, sorta. God the first time I made it to Tristram my mind was blown. To see the town of my favorite game in ruins, and to see that Griswold was a zombie! (I'm obsessed with zombies ever since I played Resident Evil on PS1. So much so I found the Walking Dead comics before they came out because I wanted a "good" zombie story. Too bad AMC ruined it.) Also, Wirt's leg is the main cube recipe for the secret cow level which is just cool on it's own. Because the cow in D1 was a thing - and I remember playing on Battle.net and hearing of a "cow armor" and me some kids spent hours trying to figure out how to get it. Then when I got the Hellfire expansion for D1 they had the NPC in a cowsuit, and I got the armor which looked cool af.
Did You Know That Hellfire had runes? Except they were spells/traps rather than socketables? Also, Hellfire was the first game to have the Monk and Barbarian. The Monk was standard, but the Barbarian (and Bard) had to be unlocked with a .txt file. You could also play the classic Rogue, Sorcerer, or Warrior.
Another Tantalizing Tidbit For Your Tender Testes, the D2 wanderer is the Warrior. Originally there was not supposed to be character classes, and the story was much more generic (I don't even think they settled on a boss/demon) this is why all the cutscenes feature the warrior and none of the other classes. According to the lore, the warrior is the one who killed Diablo, and in the cutscene is clearly him. I read somewhere that the cinematic department made it without telling the rest of the team, which explains why he just jams the Soul Stone in his forehead - cuz it doesn't make that much sense on why he'd do that. So when Diablo 2 was created they sorta just wang it (?) winged it (?) either way, they wonged it and started writing/creating the story as they went. I think they did a pretty awesome job because they let the warrior be the wander, the rogue became Blood Raven, and the sorcerer became the Summoner. Pretty cool right?
Whoa, realized I'm way off topic.
Yeah, Wirt would be my favorite NPC.
In terms of favorite character that would be hands down Arkaine. Why? *ahem*
- He was a warrior who lived before the first Diablo game. He's basically the character we'd all be if they made a Diablo 0 prequel which is cool to think about.
- He was the first mortal who single-handedly turned the tide of the Sin War, and chased the demons back to the burning hells. Balls of friggin' steel and a cock made of titanium.
- The armor had a name, and it existed before him - but it's his. It's like an equal to him - a synergy. It's not just armor, it's Valor. And he treated it well.
- Valor is a dope name. Defined as "boldness or determination in facing great danger, especially in battle; heroic courage; bravery"
- He treated it so well that before he died, he went a great length to protect it. Pure respect for it.
- In D1 I used that armor until end game, and in D2 v1.09 I remember finding one in a chest in the secret cow level. Good times.
- When you die in hardcore that's basically the last word you see.
