I'm happy someone said that. Yeah in the new update you can add sounds to the game and call them via command blocks. So when someone enters an area a proximity detector will turn on and tell them "You've entered 'area x'" and depending on what area it is I can call a sound file from the resource pack.
The resource pack with all of the d2 songs and ingame sounds is in progress. I've decompiled every mpq file in diablo to check out all the .wav sounds. I'm just sorting them right now in my itunes until I find the ones I will be using. To name only a few :

Cow sounds
Weapon hit sounds
Rogue encampment song
Lut gholein song
zombie sounds
Little fuckers in act 3 sound
Character taking damage
and it goes on and on

There's over 2000 individual sounds in there and some of them are hard to make up. anyway, I'm still working on it.

Is there a free version of Minecraft to be able to connect to servers like this just to see the work? I don't have much interest in playing Minecraft, but I'd love to check this out.

You need to have bought the game legitimately. some servers don't fetch player data on the official site and just accept anyone with any identity. But then people can use fake names and hack without consequence.
It's an important security feature to have and I've never seen a serious server owner not have it on.

Personally, I consider buying computer software and games useless and I only pay for things that are practical or really worth it. In this case, paying for minecraft you don't need to find hacked versions every update and you get to play on legit servers + the game is so worth it I've never wasted 20$ better tbh.
