to download median itself:

so firstly, you need to take your original d2_patch.mpq file out of your Diablo II Directory, and place it elsewhere, and extract the median patch_d2.mpq file in there
thats all you have to do to install median
to switch back from median to d2, just switch the d2_patch.mpq files accordingly
i have both files on my desktop, which makes it easy to switch back and forth
to play online, you need the server called d2maniacs
http://d2maniacs.shbe.org/once on that site, go to the bottom of the page and click 'Join', where there will be instructions
all you have to do, is download the Gateway Editor, run it, and put D2Maniacs as chosen gateway
once thats done, you just run d2, go on Battle.net (it will say no battle.net, but click it anyway) and make your account on there, don't go on open
once you're at the character selection screen, at the top right of the screen, where the realm selection is, it'll say 'Welcome'
in normal d2, its the place where it says 'USEast'
well once there, just switch 'Welcome' To 'Median XL'
and you should be fine
