My friend took out the fan section in his laptop to fit more ram, it just cut off every 10 minutes

this.
and it's a small form factor case from dell.
a run-of-the-mill fan won't do the trick.
or i'd have obv replaced it by now.
gona have to eebay another fan specific to this unit.
lol.
so in the meantime $8 fan from wal-mart will keep me online.

If it's like the ones I think you're talking about, the PC should run okay without it, I left one running for like 3 days without one, until I got a replacement fan... but maybe not lolol

it's an optiplex gx270.
only stays on for 5-10 minutes without the help of this boxfan..
even with the a/c kicked down, the ceiling fan on high with the case open :\

mine gets really really hot and sometimes smells like it burning..is that supposed to happen?
