if pvp is the only thing keeping people on d2,.,. why not have the pvp community start a private server.. and everyone gets 3/20/20 and whatever godly gear they want.. then pvp to your hearts content..
there is a reason botters stay on bnet and dont just start their own pvp servers.
That already exists and most good pvp happens there these days
Harder to find active games in off-hours in smaller community.
Bnet pretty much just exist to pubstomp while you wait for people to log in on private server

Towards the end of my Diablo 2 Nostalgic Resurrection I found myself just pvming with other people. I was playing legit and I had stopped picking up gear. It would take 6-10 hours to clear a game and it often included a hr find or 2. At first this kind of gaming session in this 20 year old game was like wow. It was honestly difficult to keep at it. In the end I find myself missing it.
I had gained some really great friendships. Something I had done some 15-20 years ago when I was running legit baals on a lighting sorc called leeroyyyjenkinss. I'm not sure about all you but I think one of the great thing about Diablo 2 was you could always look forward to bumping into someone interested in the same thing you were. Be it items, leveling, pvp, crafting and more. I'm happy this game is still around and I'm happy for all those folks who voted 100% legit or closed to it. You managed to hang onto the values of this game from the core level 1 newb to being a seasoned pro. All this while being surrounded by a globally flooded game of spam and less than legit players.
I would almost compare a 100% legit player in 2020 to the challenge of playing d2 hardcore :bonk:
Average age of player base has aged with the game
Fewer people have time to do a 12+ hour session on ladder resets
Thing is, pvm and even hardcore are not really challenges. There is little ingame that can kill you. You encounter like 3-4 monsters during entire 1-99 that rolled enough damage mod to 1 shot you, and often you do not even notice because they died in 1 hit themselves. It is just about how much time you have to waste, not how good you are at it.
