Okay.
For one, Asia1-3 were there to handle heavy loads, now it obviously doesn't matter but the physical location of the servers were close enough for them to have pretty much the same ping.
They only separate by realms because of ping, btw. And so now since the load is off they had no reason not to merge those realms.
East and west cannot be used by everyone in the US without a somewhat considerable difference in ping. If they kept only east, west users would always see 50-75ms ping more, not including any grid issues along the way.
Secondly, account and name changes from accounts that date back 10+ years would be an obvious issue. Who gets to keep the L33T name if the servers are merged? You or that other guy?
To fix this problem, they could assign unique ID's to every character so that people could have user#944 (example). Their current system doesn't handle this in the least and the small team doing updates probably won't do that.
Third, each realm has some broken items and it would bring wizzy gloves to east among other things that would make those gg pvp chars not so gg anymore. People would not be happy about that.
Fourth, server side unique ids for items. you have multiples of the same items across realms and I wouldn't be surprised if they had the same id. That would make some of those items no longer "perm".
Those are the main concerns in my mind. The worst being the ping.
I would rather have good ping and not lag ingame than have some rando from west run around in my game with glitched 08's.
Your friends can pick the realm you play and that's fine enough imo, in the end even if one of you is from europe they will still have shit ping even if the realms are merged if the server is located in the US.
An alternative would be to do like Path of Diablo (that d2 server) and let people choose which server they want to connect to, regardless of where the char was created. Then if you want to play with euro friends, deal with the shit ping if you think it's worth it.
This would require some serious work too. eh
