D2 was and is great. The perfect balance of strategy and real-time gameplay. Graphics is perfect balance of pixelated and realism. The depth of the game is balanced, there are many items, good storyline and characters+skills to choose from, but not too many, like in DOTA 2 .. just wayyyy to much to keep up with. One last big detail is the sound effects. When you hit something, the sound effects are quite realistic as opposed to most other games. Not all of them, but many. Like, listen to the sound effect when an arrow hits your shield. That tiny sound cue. That's the sound it would make in real life. Also, when it hits an enemy, not really realistic, but it sounds -more- realistic than as in, for example the night elf archers in warcraft 3. That sounds ridiculous. I was so disappointed in that. Sounds like a cartoon.
If i am to criticize anything about diablo 2, it would be that it could have a better explaining of the inner workings in the game. As in the breakpoints, how the different modifiers works, and so on. If one did not look up these things on the internet, there was no way of knowing what most of them did. I.e., "freeze enemy" modifier is just a -chance- to freeze the enemy, which i think is based on character level/monster level and the internal value of the modifier on the item. And so on. Bleeding, for instance, deals damage based on your character level and is usually quite negligible, at least in higher levels. These things should be explained ingame.
