I am not a fan of D2R, it seems like they made the game easier, I really do not like the graphics at all, I like the gritty old school 90s style of D2.
Same here, I remember sneaking out to the living room, getting on the Gateway Windows 98 PC, covering the modem so it didn't wake my parents up, logging in, typing /f l to see who was on, then being like "DUUUUUDE WE ARE SO DEAD TOMORROW!" but we played anyway, dueling, chatting, Bloody Foothill runs, testing builds....man what good times, I remember bringing the manual that came with the game to school and we would read it in science and think of builds to make, or little ideas we'd try later.
Ith swords and bows, 160/60 ed/ias armor, .08 Vamprie Gaze, Valk Helm, and Arkaine's Valor, Cruel Colossus Blades of Quickness, Raven Spiral rings, Imp Shank Boots, Hex Charms, Wizard Spike Gauntlets...here is a cool trip down memory lane:
https://www.rpgstash.com/blog/bugged-and-hacked-d2-itemsD3 was extremely easy and I did not enjoy it, it was also not fun online, I played D4 over the weekend, its also pretty easy, there is no exploration and the map tells you where to go, if you've played D2 I don't know how you can even die in D3 or D4. Graphics look great though in D4 and the music is pretty good, when it goes on sale I'll probably buy it, but I'll always come back to D2 Old School.
And yeah...I am old and grumpy now.
I watched some game play of d4 and was extremely disappointed. The narrative was that it would be a lot more open concept similar to D2. From what I saw the game looked identical to D3 with a D2R resurfacing vibe. Happy I didn't decide to pre buy the game, and I'd like to say I won't get it sometime down the line on sale, but I have a pretty weak arm.
Today's games just seem bad compared to the innovation these games are now piggy backing off. Obviously there are investors and profit margins etc to hit, but it wouldn't kill ya to think outside the box and generate something we haven't already played to death.
Minor changes like obtaining multiple different style of mercenaries that have unique set of skills they develope through leveling. Banding / disbanding mercenaries as you progress through the game etc.Not sure if anyone ever played dungeon seige but something along those lines. Also not sure if the new mounts can be used as pack mules like a mobile chest.
These cool down button style mashing builds are just not a lot of fun for myself.
Again I'm just getting old and everytime I see a new game come out its like...well that's just this other game with better graphics. And quit making games that are 100% grind dependent. That's where I find D2 excelled more then these other arpg games. Look at pvp for instance. Gear is absolutely crucial when players are evenly matched, but there are guys that can throw together relatively cheap builds that focus on just gaining the basic breakpoints, and end up clearing a lobby. To me that's what makes games enjoyable. Not grinding to find a ring with 6 extra hp. Or ancient armor like d3 etc etc etc. Who cares
