Sup!

Just started up playing some gw2 since it got to steam and my brother also started playing.
Someone got any suggestion on race to play and/or other tips to be useful for a beginner?
Appreciate all tips!

tracking this as im about to jump on the fence and try the first version. i played a bit of gw1 at launch but ive always been a diablo guy lol.

I think this section of GW is pretty dead by looking on the top50 pages is all about selling stuff so getting a answer regarding starting the game is pretty low i think.
I did a little bit of googling and ended up doing a Necromancer since it's apparently newbie friendly and open world solo friendly. lvl 17 so far, grinding

It's pretty hard to go wrong, every class has a build that can solo most pve content and the parts that can't usually have groups doing them. Salvage almost everything for materials there's a lot of crafting & check the trade post for the value of items they love giving new players valuable items that they just destroy

A few great resources: the gw2 subreddit, gw2wiki, hardstuck.gg (website with lots of builds etc)

Race only matters for aesthetics - racial skills are intentionally just flavor and not useful. so pick whatever you like

As for class - all of them are viable in all parts of the game. some are obviously better than others, but you can play what you want. If I were you I would try out a few different classes in the pvp area (so you have access to all of the skills) and see what strikes your fancy

Yeah i figured any class is pretty hard to go wrong with but some classes are maybe easier to play solo I been loving the necro so far and i just hit 80 with it!
Someone was kind enough to give me some 18 slot bags before and im surprised ( in a good way ) the friendliness of the community in game!
Now i just need to figure out how to get better gear.

ok, didnt know you could try out classes etc in the PvP area. Don't even know where it is but just hit 80 on my necro and been fun playing with minion build. Now grinding for better equipment

nice! hitting 80 is when the game really starts to be honest, so you're in for a treat!

as for gear - exotic level 80 gear (orange) is 10000% fine almost everything in the game including end game content. the only thing it does not work for is fractals, and that just because you need infusion slots for agony resist infusions

you can buy cheap exotics off the trading post - search for named armor pieces ( Zhed's in this case), they're berserker stats exotics that cost like 1 gold per piece. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zhed%27s_armor

as for weapons, you can find some pretty cheap berserkers stats ones too by using the searching filters - as of writing this the cheapest exotic zerker axe is : maw of the damned (2g), dagger: usoku's needle (1g), and warhorn: kodanroar (50 silver)

the accessories are typically a little bit more expensive, but not terrible:

ruby orichalcum earrings (2.5g per - you need 2)
ruby orichalcum amulet (2.67g)
ruby orichalcum ring (2.59g per - you need 2)
lucky great ox/tiger/dog/boar lantern backpack (7.5g ish)
