Hi, a friend of mine recommended this game and I was like "okay, whole world saying this is awesome, lets try it"
Well, went in, tried on pc, had to figure out the keys because there was not much info about it. The tutorial cave was fine. But after that I felt very lost. I instantly didn't follow the main quest (like in other games) but focus on side quests. Went into a cave, just go killed instantely. Went to another cave, same thing happened. Went to the merchs, sold items, bought better stuff, still died.
This game left me behind very frustarted. The story line wasn't touching me the slightest. It just seemd like some made-up plot nobody really cares about. I usually care a lot about those stories like in Skyrim or Witcher or whatever.
I also hoped to find some information about mobs in the area, like some "radar" menu that displays the mob level or something. So you at least know that this area is meant for beginners or just too early yet. But going in and just dying is so frustrating.
I dont get it, maybe it's me. But I absolutely can't find any love for that game. I've tried, because everyone seems to like. But it's horrible for me.
Lmk guys if you guys can enjoy it :)
Since you paid for it I'll give you my tips
I've thoroughly enjoyed souls games since demon's souls which was without a doubt the jankiest most convoluted RPG I've ever played.
First, if Zelda games are primarily story-driven environmental puzzle games with monsters to keep the action. Souls games answer the question: What if the monsters we're the puzzles and the story only served to encourage the player deeper into the game? Elden Ring is the first with heavy emphasis on story but it's still a souls game.
Tips:
Get a controller. This game was made for controller and it's the cleanest controller layout I've ever seen in an RPG. This is one thing they got absolutely right in demon's souls. KB/M don't cut it
Classes. I want to tell you to pick whatever class appeals as should be true of any RPG. However, this is Soulsborne. Mages are going to give you a jump in accessibility because you can evade and cast until you run out of FP and then rest at sites of grace (bonfires in previous games). Bosses will be harder but this is an online game, you should be summoning assistance for bosses
Map and remap your gear until you get a feel for what you need. Your X button (Xbox controller, square on PS) should be your flasks (down on the D-pad to swap between HP and FP). Nothing more, nothing less
For combat:
Dodge is everything. Dodge, dodge again, dodge more. Cast/swing only when you already know the attack patterns of the enemy you're fighting. Enemies are the puzzles (back to my Zelda comparison). Drink flasks when you know you won't be hit, swing when you know you'll make contact and block only if you must. Blocking is great but it will cost you so much stamina you won't have much dodge left. If you had to block, you should've dodged instead
Leveling:
This is an RPG but you have to intentionally level. Do you have runes enough to level? Do it, don't wait until you die and lose them. Are you poor in runes? Time to explore because your cost of dying is low. Don't get stuck in an area you can't beat, either level until you can beat it or spend your runes and explore until you find something you can beat.
Summoning and leaving signs:
The multiplayer is so elegantly subtle that new players find it lacking. If you need help, summon another player and don't die. If you want to explore or practice a boss fight with
zero consequences then throw your sign down and somebody will summon you. If you die in their world you lose nothing. If they succeed in an area, you get massive rewards. Easy leveling with no fear is gathering runes in another players world. The elegance is that it incentivizes community without clunky lobbies and chat.
Lastly, as others have said: get good. These games are so beloved because the difficulty makes it actually rewarding when you beat a boss or discover something new. The power ramp is such that the opening area is absurdly difficult when you start but by the end of the game you'll cut down chumps like butter
