I would like to think my character is going to end up as some sort of brute 2-hand weapon wielding bad-ass. At least that is what I am aiming for.
This is my first play through, so this is based purely on what I have gathered from the internet. I am playing on Elite in singe-player, and my build is working so far.

If u want to be bad ass... U should place u'r point more in FOCUS build 'coz it will add aditional elemental damage and use "FIRE ELEMENTAL" gears... "This gear u can buy it from me"

How many points would you suggest?

Str/dex go for the weapon and armor parts requirements you plan to play with,not more. Put other points into focus (elemental damage) and vita. In a perfect world you would already have the end game items you will have fun with and used an enchanter to boost the str/dex you need to have to use these items. You can only do that if you have already a high lvl magic-finder tho, that is why i suggest mage as first character to play tl2. This game very similar to D2...sorc/mage are the best to *mf* =)

Could you give me a hypothetical end-game gear to plan for? So I can figure out my stats a little bit better. :/

Hard to say,depend on what you really want, best thing to do is to visit torchlight2 armory =)

If this is a twink build then you will be able to wear nearly all your end game items at about level 10, use attribute stats from a enchanter.

I am going to re-roll a new character, but in Veteran this time.

yep it's true.. Mostly engineers using elemental damage such as fire.. And they use gear with elemental fire damage.. U can visit my trade about +fire damage gears..

And other's they used a lot of focus attributes for skill u can make anything and experiment everything u want to build... If u don't like it u can reset your skills using respec skill potions..
