Aside from the personal challenge and satisfaction from defeating more difficult monsters is there any reason to play the harder modes? Is there more exp, drops, or anything like that?

I can only assume, with greater risk comes greater reward.

There is no difference in drops between veteran and elite.
However, there is a difference in quests and loot from 'Original Game', to NG+ ->and beyond.
For example, NG++ is the only difficulty that offers 'Grandmaster Enchanter,' which can enchant four times and gives any stat in the game.

Whats NG+ ?
NG+ is New Game Plus. You essentially do everything over again with monsters starting at level 51. Your items, skills, stats, etc are still there, but quests are reset.
You can read into this more here:

.

No difference just accepting a more challenging gaming experience.
