They're not. This game - and its predecessor - were meant to be tinkered with. You play the game for personal satisfaction, so it doesn't matter if someone else is modding. There is no economy in Torchlight.

An unmodified client/character cannot join a game with an unmodified client/character. When you have a mod installed you are flagged and can only play with players using the same mod.

There are ways to modify your characters name/gold/skills without being flagged, but what it comes down to is that you just need to play your own way if you don't want to take advantage.

The focus of TL isn't really on PvP at all. Honestly though, if enough people bitch, the developers will probably add something in in the future.

Well, what is the focus going to be? Like most of steam games, when you finish the content, you get into mods? Like warcraft 3 custom games?
