Not interested in D3.

I'm thinking about getting into this game, and I need someone to help me out with some of the JSP side of this.

How long does levelling a character take?
Is there a consensus best character?
How much (ballpark) does gear cost on here?

Any other useful tips/tricks/hints

Thanks guys.

Levelling up doesn't take too long. You're better off just taking your time.
Not really, pick something that's appealing or suits your playstyle.
Gear is cheap because there isn't an economy. Players can use console commands and mods are supported. Using certain console commands will tag your character however, so legit players do buy/sell items. They go cheap.

Here is an example:

This game is the closest I'll get D2 in my opinion. It's great fun and once the mod tools are released there will be endless content made by the community. They will start pumping out new dungeons, characters, skills, items etc.

Here is a topic similar to yours, you can see everyone's opinion on TL2:

When you say console commands and mods are supported what exactly does that mean? I haven't touched an mmo since D2, and to be honest i'm about to put my 7 keys in action for that game, but simply to farm fg. I'm 100% done with the pvp in diablo 2...

There are no closed servers, players play online with single player characters and vice versa.
This means that modding is seen as the norm, the Devs even encourage it.

Using console commands, you can do many things such as spawn a specific item. A lot of console commands will tag your character, people online will see your tag.

ah sounds like a fun concept, but I was hoping for a game that put people on an even playing field.

If modding and item spawning are encouraged what do people do in the game? 100% pvp? is trading not a thing? if it's so easy to create items why is there any JSP market at all?

What do people do with in game gold?

sorry bout all the questions, I think I'm just a little confused.

The TL2 community is a mixed bunch basically.

Modding is encouraged, but many people play vanilla TL2. Vanilla meaning 'normal'.
There are a lot of legit players that don't wish to be tagged and enjoy playing the game as it is, hence why there are people trading items.
Console commands are there to be used, but not many use them for every character.
I have a couple of legit HC characters and I mess about on SC using commands and mods for ridiculous loot drops etc.
If you wished to play on an even playing field you can just kick people a cheater if you like or password your games. There is a big 'legit friends list' on the Runic Forums. If you add everyone on that you'll see their games on the games list as a different colour.

In game gold is used to buy potions, items from vendors, respawn at your current position rather than in town. It's main use is gambling, gambling is far better for getting items than it was in D2. People often land themselves a unique item. Gold can also be used to purchase maps once you complete your first playthrough, these unlock dungeons to clear out.

In short, there is a legit community out there that trades, there are lots of people that enjoy modding TL2. Even without the proper tools being released modders have created new enemies, many new dungeons etc.
There are also lots of people that play legit and mod as well, like me. ^_^

Most important use of gold in TL2 are the enchanters. Only thing i buy is tp / id scrolls. Tl2 is very similar to D2, best character to use for *mfing* purpose is mage because of the teleport skill so i strongly suggest peoples to start with a mage. Drop ratio are much better in Tl2 than D2,not even comparable. Best thing to do is just complete the game, once you finished act 1-2-3 and get to the Netherlord, farm it alot as he drops a minimum of 2 uniques ( mf% or not, a steady 2 uniques every times you kill it) . Thats how i build my account so far and it worked wonderful =)
