Been hearing some mixed opinions on this. Generally speaking, people will probably view tournaments more favourably when their own team performed well, so I'm expecting that trend in this thread too.

My first proper world cup was 2002, which was my favourite one until this year. Russia hosted a brilliant world cup in my opinion.

Germans not making it out of group?

Best of my lifetime lad.

In all seriousness though, I thought the ruskies put on a good show, both as hosts and as a football team.

Few upsets.
Imo VAR worked well enough for it's first attempt at a WC.
Was some genuinely entertaining matches throughout.
And again, imo, deserved winners in the end.

certainly above average (not talking about the german "performance" ofc), there was no trouble, good atmosphere in russia and the predicted var disaster didnt happen
russia was a great host overall imo

many will criticise the overall level of the competition, but i found it to be very entertaining
i had a good time with most of the games

however this final leaves a bitter taste behind, what a colossal referee disgrace disgrace and the better team lost the match
seeing some decisions on the highest level in the cl or today really ruin all the fun for me, the refs should be last people anyone talks about

Pretty good, although held back by the really weak side of the bracket, the lack of a truly standout player (which always makes things exciting), and an imbalanced final (yeah, Croatia dominated, but they made ridiculous mistakes for a WC finalists and France was never forced to give their all... the high scoring was nice, but that's the only redeemable bit of the final) with flawed officiating.

I've watched almost every WC game from 1982 (which were all re-broadcasted in Spain on the 30th anniversary of the event) and 1998 onwards, plus around half the games of 1986, 1990 and 1994... and I'd say this one was definitely better than the atrocious 1990 and 2010 (even if Spain won it, I have to admit it was awful), better than the also pretty bad 1994, and probably better than 2002 and 2014. 1982, 1986, 1998 and 2006 were all significantly better though imo.

1998 was my first and that was great aswell. France had probably one of the strongest squads of all time. 2002 was also great because Prime Brazil, Prime Ronaldo de Lima we only just saw his glimpes of his greatness in 1998.

I'd probably rank them like this:

1. 1982
2. 1986
3. 1998
4. 2006
5. 2018
6. 2014
7. 2002
8. 1994
9. 2010
10. 1990

2006 was really fun indeed, but I think the top 3 I listed are on a tier of their own, and any of those 3 could qualify as the best ever (at least since the 80s, I know that some other WCs like 1970 are considered memorable, but I haven't seen enough games to judge properly).
