That's 46 spots in total. The last two will be decided from a playoff involving 6 teams (1 from each confederation, except UEFA, and 1 extra for the confederation of the country that hosts the WC).


seriously, wtf is this crap. It was obvious we were going to get a bunch of random teams with this format, but this distribution is ridiculous...

South America gets just one more spot while Africa goes from 5 to 9, and Asia and North America double their spots

I'd much rather watch any team from South America, or any UEFA team that would be ranked 16-24th, than countries like Congo, Trinidad or Syria ffs

I think something like (using the above order) 20/8/5/7/7/1 and no playoff would have been better. Well, obviously the best solution would be to keep the current 32 team format, but you know what I mean...


This distribution FIFA has announced still needs to be approved though, but it will most likely go through.

looks like fifa sees more potential money when more northern american and african teams join the wc, while the largest southern american nations are regulars anyway

tbh I don't see how Caribbean islands with populations of around 1 million or poor african countries can be a profitable market in the short term
