So today a penalty was called for the first time with the help of video technology in the CWC semifinals... and it wasn't a penalty

The player fouled was offside. The ref hadn't given the penalty, and a minute and a half later was called to stop the game and check the replay, after which he decided to award the non-existing penalty.

Personally, I think this is a horrible implementation of technology in football. Letting the game play on for over a minute only to later go back to overturn a decision will cause more problems than it can solve. Not to mention that penalties and fouls have a certain degree of subjectivity and also the camera angle can be misleading. I hope they just stick to using this stuff to determine something that's 100% objective, such as if the ball has crossed a line or not, or if the foul happened in or outside the box.

Don't know whether he was offside or not , but the penalty was giveable. The defender hit the attacker in his achilles tendon, I feel like that was giveable.

Didn't hear about him being offside tho.

The penalty could have been given if he was onside, but he wasn't. The video doesn't show the moment the ball is crossed, but he was ahead.

well, the way this all went down is certainly not good

he was offside, but that doesnt mean the defender can foul him when the ball is not there, quite some time between the foul and the ball arriving
imo a legit pen

It's only a foul with the ball in play isn't it?

If it's offside the ball is no longer in play.

I like the idea of video refs, but not in this way.

Needs to be more rugby style with a guy in a box with all camera angles, and in football they could decide on decisions while the game carries on, but the decisions should only be for goalscoring chances, not arguing over who gets a throw in at the half way line.

You can't deliberately harm a player that's offside (as in violent conduct), but if a player is offside you can't call penalty like that either. The player isn't supposed to be there. He's blocking/distracting the defender from an illegal position, it's only logical that he's going to get pushed away.

It's why we have positional offsides called when a player is distracting the goalkeeper or whatever, even if he isn't going to play the ball. If you're offiside then you can't affect the play in any way, and definitely not by causing a penalty...

happened to us a few seasons ago

striker got fouled by the goalie after being offside

yellow card for the keeper but freekick for them because it was offside

This is what I had in mind, you can get a card but not a penalty. Seems logical.

Another incident

The ref declared Cristiano's goal was onside (it was), but then he checked the replay and decided it wasn't, and a bit later when the game was resumed someone told him that it was definitely not offside and he went back to his original decision
