I read somewhere that Spanish law dictates that you can avoid prison sentences of less than 2 years by paying fines/other forms of punishment etc. Was something along the lines that Messi would pay a fine, and be banned from leaving the country, so he could play domestic UCL games, but not away games.


Which sounds ridiculous to me.

You can pay fines and avoid it if your sentence is under 2 years and you meet 2 conditions:

-You have a clean record
-The judge doesn't consider that setting you free could put others in danger, or there is a very high chance that it would cause some sort of harm

Since Messi meets both of those conditions, he will avoid jail time.
