been watching some of the euro16 but i don't follow the socer much so i got a question that im hoping someone can help me out with

I notice that when a player leaves the game, the tv broadcast shows how much distance they covered. I do not remember this stat being shown during the last world cup.

Do they have some sort of computer chip on their bodies that is tracking their movement? Or is that tracked from a camera that is watching their movements? Is this stat a relatively new thing in the sport, or have people been using that for years?

thanks

Been done for years

"FIFA relies on a visual tracking technology called "Matrics" made by the Italian company deltatre to provide data that make up the heat maps, passes completed and distance covered stats made available at the World Cup official site.

From deltatre's webpage:

deltatre can very proudly say to have successfully delivered 3 FIFA World Cups™ since 2002 (South Korea and Japan 2002, Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010) and a total of 1.191 matches including other FIFA Competitions: result of continuous investments in software, hardware, training and people."

(this may be outdated in terms of technology and what is currently being used)
