The Spanish league plans to fine clubs that allow empty seats to be shown on television next season.

New regulations require top-tier clubs to fill sections of the stadium which are shown by certain camera angles.

The move is part of efforts to improve the league's product for TV audiences and increase its competitiveness with England's Premier League.

In May 2015, Spain approved new laws so rights to show La Liga matches will be pooled and sold collectively.

Previously, Real Madrid and Barcelona had negotiated their own lucrative deals.

Fines for not filling your stadiums?

Now I'm not usually one to attack the spanish since I don't really give a shit, but that is fucking embarrassing.

If they are trying to improve the "league's product" for TV then they need to stomp out all the crybaby rolling around the floor then getting straight back up to shout at the ref bollocks that plagues the league. It is literally the only reason people don't enjoy the football.

Well, the people running La Liga are a joke so it's no surprie they'd come up with something like this.

Stadia aren't being filled up mainly because ticket prices are high and the match scheduling is far from omptimal.

Their policies over the last 10 years have encouraged people to watch the games on TV rather than in a stadium... and now they complain that there are empty seats :wallbash:

The only good thing that might come out of this decision (if it ends up going through), would be that clubs might lower ticket prices so that more people attend games.

Over all attendances aren't that big of a problem in Primera, but in Segunda it's ridiculous... there are some stadia with 10-15% attendances.

Some attendances of the bottom half of the table is terrible... Really not sure why stadiums can't be full all the time.

Well, like I said, it's prices and scheduling for the most part. We don't have a thriving economy atm and most people aren't going to pay 60€ to watch a game unless it's an important one. And if it's scheduled at lunch time or past dinner time it only makes things worse.

Then there's the added problem of there being clubs like Levante and Getafe that have a very small fanbase, so the club has an even smaller market to appeal to. It's especially worse in the case of Getafe, as they were a 3rd/4th level club until 15-20 years ago (and didn't even exist until 1983) and 95% of their fans support other clubs and just hopped on the wagon when Getafe became relevant.

But this rule seems to target those same smaller clubs. It's crazy. If this were to happen in the english championship a lot of teams would be completely screwed, most have bigger stadiums than they can possibly fill no matter what their ticket prices are.

There simply has to be a better way to improve your TV brand beyond punishing the little guys.

Irrelevant af. The league is boring why not even the Spanish go to the games ;)
Srsly tho it's sad some of the teams can't sell out a 15k/20k stadium

Boring? Three teams fighting for the title until the last game?

Keep kicking the ball and running like a wild dog.

This isn't about the effectiveness of the teams in Europe. This is about why smaller teams should(nt) get punished for not being able to fill a stadium.
