JOSE MOURINHO is alleged to have turned from ‘The Special One’ to ‘The Sobbing One’ after hearing he had been overlooked for the Manchester United manager’s job.
Mourinho “felt betrayed” after learning that David Moyes and not the then Real Madrid boss had been chosen by outgoing Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson to succeed him.
In ‘Prepare To Lose – The Mourinho Era’ written by respected El Pais journalist Diego Torres, the Chelsea manager originally believed he was the hot favourite to become the new Manchester United chief.
When he discovered United had gone for Moyes he supposedly broke down in tears.
When he knew that Ferguson had chosen Moyes he was struck by a terrible disbelief – Moyes hadn’t won anything
Torres claims: “The most feared man was crushed.
“Mourinho thought that Ferguson was, besides being his ally, also his friend and godfather. He thought that they were tied by a relationship of genuine trust.
“He thought that his fabulous collection of titles constituted an endorsement unreachable to any other contenders.
“When he knew that Ferguson had chosen Moyes he was struck by a terrible disbelief – Moyes hadn’t won anything.
“He thought that at least Ferguson would offer him an explanation.”
Spanish journalist Torres maintains that Mourinho was reduced to tears after contacting his representatives at the sports agency Gestifute.
He writes: “His interlocutors (those involved in the conversation) heard him sob loudly.”
In the book Torres says that Mourinho felt that Pep Guardiola had been United’s ?rst choice to step into Ferguson’s shoes only for the former Barcelona boss to agree to becom***ern Munich manager.
That left Mourinho, in his view, the clear favourite especially through his close relationship with Ferguson.
The claims of Torres, who followed Mourinho closely during his time at Real Madrid, have been denied by the current Chelsea manager’s aides.
That went well for all parties concerned
