No "pushing back ajax" should not necessarily be your goal. There have been plenty of good teams that play a more defensive style with great success.
There are many ways to win a game.
In reality controlling possession and not giving up any counter attacks is easier said than done.

Yes sometimes its correct to put more pressure on teams and build a larger lead. Those games are not this game, nor were the strategies the exact same.
