if more of his worldclass assists lead to goals.. nobody would have criticized him..
yes.. he was in bad form.. but every player had bad times in their career.. this kind of critic was the reason why ozil turned into really bad form.. no surprise.. i would also demotivated if this happened to me..

It was not the players around him that didn't perform.
The fact he had to play as a lw made him change his gameplan, causing him to defend aswell, something he hardly did during those times.
He was in a poor from for a long time, he didn't create as many chances as he used to when he first joined, but the critic was stricly from the press only.
Wenger stands behind Özil 100% and asked the fans to do the same and they did.

Would love it if Akpom and Zelalem would play today

but then i dont get why wenger did stick with özil on the wing for so many games
it was always evident that he needs to play as number 10 even before he joined arsenal

btw, in modern football ALL players are supposed to defend wherever they play

Because we have so many players that want to play central, wenger often puts central players out wide so they can figure out other positions to become more valueable.
Ramsey was put as a RW for 2 full seasons, and look how that worked out, his offensive power is way better
