The best / most exciting players don't always make the best captains. Mertesacker or Koscielny would be solid choices for captain

No he wasn't, he lost his place in the side shortly after the Chelsea away game to Demichelis. He had injuries but it wouldn't have changed anything if he was fit.

Like I said, watch some more football
