Also Italian center* defenders are simply better than any other nation (imo and not just now, last few decades) and the domestic league offers a playstyle to cultivate this as well.
Aye but Conte did it in basically 12 months with Bonucci, he had a pretty awful first season with Juventus and he was very mistake prone. I read an article that Conte brought in a sports psychologist to work with Bonucci and others and it helped.
Another case would be Barzagli, bought for nothing and integrated into the team to be one of our best and most reliable for Juventus and Italy. And he was up there in age.
David Luiz as Chelsea's Bonucci would work in my opinion, as a stopper and distributor, I could see it but again, I'm not saying it's defenitive because every player is different but I like the match of Conte and Luiz.
