A long term injury usually destroys a player both in terms of morale/confidence/puttin the leg in/fighting for the balls but most importantly in terms of fitness. Plus there is a risk the same injury can come again.

Keeping it Arsenal related, rosicky never fully recovered from that 1 season-out injury. He was a joy to watch when he arrived from bvb, a top or nearly world-class midfielder. Although he has been overperforming this season, he is ages away from what he once displayed on the pitch.

Time will tell i guess.
