People actually do.
Maybe not so much today, but it is a common appellation.
I got a shirt with the 1990's final line up, Die Mannschaft being written all over it.
I agree that it's not used that much in today's media anymore but I don't get why everybody is acting like they never heard that word before/it never existed :x
well i guess everybody is "acting" like this because we've really never heard it used like this.
where exactly are you from? somewhere close to belgium? maybe it's a regional thing...
my friends and i talk a lot about football and i brought this up and every single one agreed, i've also asked my uncle (because i already assumed it could have been a temporary thing) if he ever heard it used as a nickname before but he hadn't.
also, i've looked up all major newspaper headlines and i didn't find a single german source calling it "die mannschaft".
same for 1990 headlines. are you sure that on your shirt is actually a nickname and not only literally what it says: "the team"?
