I was about to say this. English national team is full of Diva like players that only care about being called up rather than represent where they are from. The English play for the name on the back rather than the one on the front.

México might not have players of English caliber but you best believe they play their hearts out.

And still lose.
England won last 4 games against Mexico and conceded only one goal in the process.

But we walked away with 7 points and 5 gf and 3 goals conceded at the world cup.

H2h right now, México would take England to town.

I don't think it's really comparable, Mexico's group was relatively weak.

Brazil with Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, and Neymar were clear favorites to win the WC and we got a tie against them.

The quick and elusive Cameroon got lucky they disallowed 2 goals from us.

The mighty Croatia that can beat any European team on any given day were brought down to mercy from our strong side.

Netherlands were tossed around like a rag doll when they played us but one defensive mistake and 1 really bad call ruined our WC dreams.

So clearly Mexico played an overall amazing World Cup whilst England got lucky to participate.

all the sports on the list (except possibly/probably baseball) are played by significantly more people than american football
but seems you are only aware of what is happening north of the mexican border

else it might not even pass the qualification like three times before

edit: i doubt very much that the current english team would have had a chance against mexico
perhaps by penalties - but i am not sure if the english players learned yet how to convert them on the world stage
