Manchester United are making an astonishing move to buy Chelsea’s Brazilian star David Luiz - and would pay £30million for the defender.

New United manager David Moyes has made secret approaches for the buccaneering centre-half, who is also a target for Barcelona and has been left out of Jose Mourinho’s sides early this season following a pre-season hamstring problem.

Moyes thinks the colourful character may not be a Mourinho-style player because he takes risks at the back, but would love to see him at the Old Trafford club.

The Scot knows first-choice pair Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand can pick up injuries and will struggle to handle their busy fixture list of domestic and European matches.

Luiz has been a United priority for weeks, with work on the deal being done behind the scenes - even while the west Londoners engaged in a very public pursuit of Reds striker Wayne Rooney.

Moyes hopes to prey on Luiz’s doubts about whether Mourinho will use him regularly and step in for the shaggy-haired 26-year-old before the window shuts at 11pm on Monday night.

Champions United would rather not do a Luiz-plus-money for Rooney deal, and are plotting to get one without losing the other - although Chelsea remain equally determined to get Rooney.

Sort of want.

It seemed David Moyes didn’t want to break up any part of last season title winning squad at Manchester United.

But Paddy Power are now paying out on bets of Nani to Juventus, like they did on Carlos Tevez to Juventus, 10 days before the transfer was completed.

This could just be a PR stunt by the bookmakers, with fewer than 2000 followers on Twitter or Nani could in fact be joining former teammate Paul Pogba at the Old Lady.

Nani’s opportunities in the first team have gradually become fewer and fewer and has been moved with a link away from Old Trafford throughout the summer.

Skybet have taken notice of Paddy Power’s actions slashing their own odds of Nani to Juventus to 2/7.

The Everton defender Leighton Baines has asked his manager Roberto Martinez and the club's chairman Bill Kenwright to agree a deal to sell him to Manchester United, The Independent understands.

The left-back has been the subject of three bids from United over the summer, for £9m, £12m and as part of a joint bid worth up to £30m, including Marouane Fellaini, all of which have been rejected by Everton. It is anticipated that United will bid for a fourth time to sign Baines before the transfer window closes on Monday at 11pm.

Baines met with Martinez on the first day of pre-season to tell the new Everton manager that he wanted the club to negotiate a deal with United.

Since then Baines, 28, has not missed a training session when fit and has played in both Premier League games so far this season. He is in the squad for tonight's Capital One Cup second round tie against League One side Stevenage. Since that original meeting with Martinez, which followed United's first bid for the player, Baines has reiterated his desire that Everton try to agree a deal.

The England international has met with Martinez, on a number of occasions, and Kenwright. His position has not changed: he would like the opportunity to play for United, not least to play in the Champions League.

Baines' former manager David Moyes has prioritised the signing of the left-back since taking over at Old Trafford. His current left-back Patrice Evra has one year remaining on his deal. Baines has been at Everton since 2007 and has two years left on his existing deal.

I wouldn't mind see him drop to the bench then sold next summer.
Awesome player, but WC 2010 broke him.
