The point is, Southampton never responded to United's offer.
If United matched Spurs' bid, he would've gone to United, first team or not, of course he's saying at that time that he wanted to move to Spurs to get along with the fans.

He just said that he picked Spurs over United.

Soton didn't have to reject the bid, the player did it.

yep I remember SAF saying about it too..
