a very detailed article from sky. easy to understand especially for some people around here.

an important point to note from the article is

Despite English teams' performances in Europe steadily dropping over the last three seasons, last term remains an extreme and unusual occurrence.

It was only the second time since 2003 that Italy have outperformed England in Europe, while the last time Serie A had two teams in the Champions League quarter-finals was 2006/07. In the nine seasons since, England have managed that feat six times.

But it is in the Europa League where English teams have failed to make their mark on overall coefficients. Since 2010/11, Chelsea are the only English side to have reached at least the semi-finals of Europe's second competition, on their way to winning it in 2012/13. In that time, Italy have had three semi-finalists.

So, even if the Premier League's Champions League sides perform badly - a run from Liverpool or Tottenham to the final of the Europa League could make up for it.

imo they should just seperate points allocation for both UEL and UCL.

The trouble is most teams from England see the Europa League as a hindrance. Some of the teams that have been sent out are shocking. Yes, some of the teams they play are not very good, but at least show some respect and not expect free wins with kids.

yea. Most teams that end up playing UEL mostly suffer a drop in performance come matchday in PL. and they ended up midtable. Only fulham did really well some time ago didnt they? oh and chelski

It would keep the smaller leagues from growing, since they send most of their teams to EL rather than CL. They wouldn't have a chance of getting more CL spots if only the points they got in the CL mattered towards getting more CL spots.

I genuinely thought that giving a cl spot to the winner would make our teams try harder, but even that doesn't seem to motivate them. It seems the only reasonable way teams like spurs Liverpool and Everton have a decent shot at making cl.

Yeah, but UEFA's job is to do what's best for it's 54 members overall, not just one of them.

If Spain and Germany have no problem keeping their allocations safe then there's no excuse for the english teams to not be able to.

Barca or real?
Barca struggle without messi. And real has Rafa as their manager. I'd be shocked if they make it to the finals.
