I think he meant the majority didn't care.
Southampton, West Ham, Spurs all threw out very weak sides this year.
Tbh, I think the only reason Liverpool got as far as they did is because they got drew against Man utd, which obv can't lose to rivals, and then Dortmund, who got the place rocking with a round of yall never bla bla bla.
not only are teams with that much money expected to win against the teams they were eliminated by no matter what, the whole "didn't care, played their youth team" myth is simply not true:
the southhampton team that was eliminated: pellè, (long subbed in), mané, wanyama, ward-prose, romeu, davis, yoshida, fonte, stekelenburg...
west ham's starting eleven against giurgiu: adrian, creswell, ogbonna, collins, o'brien(!), noble, oxford (!), kouyaté, payet, valencia, zarate...
and liverpool went all in too - even before they played united: when they narrowly beat augsburg, they also fielded their best team - and they did in in group stage too...
tottenham is the only club this is somewhat (though not nearly as much as ppl think if you look at their starters in that competition) true for because kane did not start each and every game (played "just" 7 out of their 10 el games) and they had their 2nd goalie play el (like barcelona plays ter stegen in cl - like when they won it last year)...
