If you're new just go with whatever your assistants suggest. They'll give you some suitable formations and recommendations on other stuff. They give advice every few days in a backroom meeting. The meeting is located from the "Staff" on the left and then "Backroom meeting" up top.

After playing a while you'll learn what stats matter for each position and what tactic best suits your current team and how to make and find cheap deals etc. You can always improve on everything in the game which makes it so addictive imo.

in FM, how does it work with players 30+?
can they still improve? do they decrease in skill a lot? or stay the same?

Generally, the physical stats decay, the mental ones improve, and the technical ones stay more or less the same
