Sevilla's director of football was given an amazing farewell on sunday. He picked up the club in Segunda 17 years ago and he's credited as the main reason Sevilla has today regained its former glory of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. During his spell Sevila has won 5 ELs, 2 Copas, 1 Supercopa and 1 UEFA Supercup... more titles than in the club's previous history. It's no wonder he is leaving like a hero.
He made the club focus on developing youth players (Ramos, Navas, Reyes, Puerta, etc) and he showed a great ability in discovering cheap randoms with the potential of developing into great players that were worth a lot more (Alves, Baptista, Adriano, Keita, Krychowiak, etc). Many clubs have now copied his scouting techniques and the way he organizes the club.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of the club now. If they don't find a good replacement for him then this could be a huge blow for them. I'm also curious about where Monchi will go now. He says he was burnt out after so many years in the same club, and it's no secret that he was upset about Sevilla selling their key players every season. He says he has received outstanding offers from many clubs, and it looks like Roma is his preferred option.
